Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety. In 1860 the militia was reorganized into the State Guard, the Enrolled Militia, and the Militia of the Reserve. ...

Peter Dudley was a prominent citizen of Frankfort, Kentucky. Percival Butler, a native of Pennsylvania, was one of five brothers, all of whom gained some prominence through military service in the Revolutionary War. He came to Kentucky in 1784, settling in Port William in 1796. Butler served as Kentucky's first adjutant general from statehood in 1792 through the War of 1812. General John W. Finnell was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on December 24, 1821. He graduated from Transylvania University at the age of seventeen and studied the art of printing with his father. He later studied law with Richard H. Menefee and graduated from Transylvania law school in 1841. Finnell was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1843 and served as secretary of state under Gov. John J. Crittenden in 1848.
